My International Day

Today was the day!

"My International Day" is the only orientation event that I am required to go to. Or as the aussies say COMPULSORY.

Just a little background on how things go down here in the great down under... This whole week is Orientation week. The UNI hosts events and workshops that you can attend but they are ALL optional. You an go to all, you can go to some, you can blow them all off and just show up to the first day of school.... they don't care. Its 100% up to you. That's one thing I have learned about Australia, they truly are super laid back. When it comes to deadlines, rules, and start times they're really flexible. For example the workshop I went to the other day started 15 minutes after the written start time, and International Day today started around 9:45 when it was supposed to start at 9:30.

I arrived around 9:20 and sat with my friend Andrew. He is also from Sac State and we've been in communication since meeting at a study abroad event at Sac State. It's nice to have someone around who is from home.

They bored us to tears from 9:45 to 11:30 with presentations about everything from safety, bus travel, train travel, tourist sites, animals, etiquette... you name it. at 11:30 we broke for "morning tea" then from 11:45 to 12:45 there was a lot more talking....about things... I was clearly riveted and paying total attention...

We had Lunch and then set off on a scavenger hunt they made for us in order to learn our way around the school. I was teamed up with Andrew, my housemate Isaac, and three kids from Germany. It was a fun little scavenger hunt. After that they brought in animals for us to pet and take pictures with (finally something interesting) and then they raffled off an ipad mini.

Overall it was informative, and some parts were fun (animals & scavenger hunt) but for the most part it was really boring. Here are the pictures!

Excited for the Day!

Lunch
Rice & a chicken chili type thing...

This is a relative of the kangaroo.
It's full grown at this size but its endangered
She said its called a Brushwood Billie or something.

Koala!

The only snake in Australia thats NOT poisonous
A type of python.. his name was Kyle or something
Totally made me laugh.

He was a sweet big Koala.

EMU!
Our mascot at ECU.
This was my scavenger hunt group.
(Andrew is right next to me in the green,
and Isaac is on the far right with the briefcase)

Wait. You're at ECU, where the Mascot is an EMU and you're studying at UNI. Got it. They shorten EVERYTHING! Can't believe they call that little critter a Brushwood Billy, without shortening it to a "Bru Bill" or a "Br Bi". I forgot they have CRAZY Poisonous snakes there. Some of the deadliest in the world. Think I'd stay on the sidewalk! The Koala looks sleepy....was he at the lecture too?
